We love books at Saint Andrew’s OC School! You only need to look at our bookshelves to see how much love and care we put into providing children with the best, most beautiful books: for them to learn from and to rejoice in. We did not just celebrate World Book Day this year, we celebrated a whole Book Week. It all started on Monday when the children went on a field trip across town to the large Waterstones bookstore on Princess street. They took the bus together with their teachers. Each child had a £20 voucher that was kindly given to them for Christmas by a special donor who support our school. They were free to choose what books to buy (so long as Mr. Telfer agreed that it was a good quality book). But, had to stay within their budget. Suddenly, everyone cared about getting their arithmetic right, making sure they choose books that will make the most use of their budget. The wonderful day ended with the children having their lunch and playing in the handsome Princess Street Gardens, before returning to school on the bus.
The rest of the week was spent making a poster. Each child chose their favourite book. On Wednesday they made oral presentations to their peers, telling them why their book is worth reading. Children learnt to think about vocabulary, narrative structure, characters and illustration. Thursday was the big day! The posters were ready, and each child had their own station set up. Parents went around each station, asking questions, and children told their guests all about their favourite book. It was obvious to all how much real work the children put into their presentations. The result was very impressive!
