Saint Andrew's Orthodox Church School

Secondary School

Many parents ask us if we are going to expand into secondary school. They see how much children can flourish in a rigorous Christian Classical education and wish that we would offer a programme for older pupils.

The answer is that we would also like to see the school grow one day to provide a middle and high-school programme. We aspire to this, and with God’s help, we believe that one day the many practical difficulties involved can be overcome.

In the meantime, we offer an afterschool academic enrichment programme on Friday afternoons. It is intended for children aged between 12-15 (S1 to S3) who attend other schools throughout the week, or who homeschool. In a small group, led by expert teachers, pupils study History, Logic and a Classical Language (either Classical Greek or Latin).

The club is a ‘Classical supplement’ to a child’s education. It is an opportunity for them to cultivate their interest in history and culture; to develop academic maturity; to be inspired by the high-calibre scholars who teach the lessons; and last but not least, to build friendships with other pupils, and grow together in knowledge and understanding.

The programme is rich with knowledge, thought provoking and frankly, fascinating. However, we know that it is a Friday afternoon and children have been working hard all week at school. Time is given to socialising and play. Lessons are interactive, based on story-telling and conversation.

The programme runs Fridays between 14:30 and 17:30. Classes take place at Saint Andrew’s Orthodox Church School, in Newington, Edinburgh. A fee of £20 per week is payable before the start of each term.

We keep groups small and places are limited. Families who are interested in a place on the programme are invited to get in touch with us at info@standorthodox.org.uk.
