October 7th, 2025
To the solemn music of the bagpipes resounding proudly across the entire neighborhood, with hearts grateful and enthusiastic, 11 primary school pupils in their formal uniform and tartan ties stood with their families and teachers on the front lawn of their new school waiting for his Grace Bishop Raphael of Ilion to arrive. The day was September 5th 2025 and his Grace was coming to bless the waters and mark the opening of the first Orthodox primary school in Scotland.

His Grace Bishop Raphael, assisted by priest Caius and deacon Andrei, both of whom have children attending the school, performed the blessing of the water. Everyone joined in to sing ‘save oh Lord thy people and bless your inheritance’ as we moved across the building blessing every room with holy water. After this we sat in the hall as the bishop addressed the children, telling them to rejoice in the blessings that God has granted them and advising them how to develop these blessings for an eternal life, so that they may always be enriched and successful – not only as citizens of our nation but as friends of God.

Following this refreshments were served and parents had an opportunity to meet the school staff and each other. The atmosphere of the entire morning was one of shared rejoicing in our God-given joy. There was excitement for the upcoming academic year and anticipation for great things to come. The opening of this primary school has made history and is an important milestone for Orthodoxy in the British Isles.
